The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, one of the largest
postgraduate medical schools in Europe, is pleased to invite
applications for two Medical Research Council-funded studentships, which
will be awarded to a science graduate for research leading to a PhD in
epidemiology, medical statistics, nutrition or demography. The
studentship will run for 3 years from October 2006 and will provide fees
plus stipend, subject to eligibility requirements. Research in the
Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and in the Infectious
Disease Epidemiology Unit (which will join the Department on 1 May)
focuses on issues of major public health or social importance. The
Department is multidisciplinary and encompasses epidemiologists, medical
statisticians, mathematical modellers, medical demographers,
nutritionists, social scientists and public health practitioners. The
projects being offered fall within the following areas: statistical and
epidemiological methods; modelling of infectious diseases; intervention
research; genetic, nutritional, infectious disease and cancer
epidemiology; and maternal/women's health research. Alternatively, you
may submit your own proposal for consideration subject to availability
of an appropriate supervisor, who should be contacted prior to

expect to obtain a 1st or 2.1 university degree, and a relevant MSc, or
have a combination of relevant qualifications and experience which
demonstrate equivalent ability and attainment. The full MRC award is
available to UK residents only; other EU nationals may receive tuition
