MSc in MEDICAL STATISTICS
University of Leicester, UK
Around 10 studentships are available for entry in Sept 2006 (worth at
least £12,000 + fees)
Based within the Medical School at the University of Leicester, this well
established and successful one year full-time or two-three years part-time
course is intended mainly for students with a good honours degree of which
mathematics/statistics is the main subject, and with a working knowledge
of basic probability and statistics.
The orientation of the course is applied and vocational; it aims to
produce graduates who can immediately work as medical statisticians in
pharmaceutical companies, research units and the NHS. While all necessary
theory is covered, the emphasis throughout is on applying and adapting it
to real-life circumstances. The analysis of real data sets plays a large
part in the course and the central role of IT in implementing modern
statistics is constantly emphasised. Excellent PC and UNIX mainframe
facilities are available. Practical work makes extensive use of standard
statistical packages, including SAS, Stata and WinBUGS.
Medical statistics forms probably the largest single area of application
of statistical theory and there is no shortage of jobs for well-qualified
MSc graduates ( http://www.rss.org.uk/careers/ ).
