The job
As a PhD student in the Statistical Genetics Group, you will develop statistical tools for the project ‘Biomarkers of the rate of ageing’. These tools will be used, in particular, for the study of biomarkers, censored outcomes and genetic data observed in families (the Leiden Longevity Study). The type of analysis will be linkage as well as genetic association. The new statistical methods will have to be implemented in computer code.
You will work with researchers from different disciplines and will have some teaching responsibilities. You will be expected to present your work both in prominent scientific journals, at international conferences and in a doctoral thesis.
The department
The Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) encompasses the activities of the Faculty of Medicine of Leiden University and the Leiden University Hospital. The LUMC aims for excellence in all areas of teaching, patient care and biomedical research. In our work, we place great emphasis on the interaction between fundamental and clinical research.
You will be part of a team of ten that form the Statistical Genetics Group of the Medical Statistics Section in the Department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics. The section undertakes research into statistical modelling, statistical genetics and the statistical elements of bioinformatics. Its activities include teaching, statistical consulting for medical research within the LUMC and research into bio-statistical methodology.
This research project is grant-supported by the IOP.
Your profile
You hold an MSc in Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Mathematical Biology or Methodology with a programming component. You are able to work independently and as a team player with researchers from other disciplines. You have good communication skills, both written and spoken and will be able to present your work in scientific papers and at international conferences.
What we offer
The position is full-time (38 hours per week) for an initial period of one year, followed by a further period of four years, conditional on a positive first-year appraisal. The starting salary is € 1,877 gross per month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of € 2,407 gross per month in the fourth year (doctoral student scale of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch universities).
