***To all interested in the Edinburgh Local Group of the Royal
Statistical Society (RSS)***
Our third talk of the 2006-2007 session is scheduled to take place at
the USUAL time of 6.00 pm on the *FIRST* Tuesday of this month (Tuesday 5 December 2006).
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE THAT IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU DO NOT ARRIVE ON THIS OCCASION
BEFORE 1745. THIS IS TO ALLOW THE MEETING ROOM TO BE VACATED BY THOSE ATTENDING AN
EARLIER MEETING. MANY THANKS FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION. THE NEW POSTER ON OUR WEBSITE
(SEE BELOW) HAS BEEN UPDATED ACCORDINGLY.
The full announcement is provided in text form later in this message.
However, I would also like to draw your attention to the new website for
the Edinburgh local group of the RSS at
http://www.bioss.sari.ac.uk/staff/adam/rsse/
where you can learn more about past and future meetings of our group and
about the workings of the RSS in general. It is anticipated that this
site will provide an alternative route to sharing information with
multiple recipients, given the problems that can arise with e-mail
attachments.
***Posters for advertising***
====================
Please kindly note that for those interested in advertising this meeting,
a poster is available for downloading in MS Word and pdf formats at the above site.
To avoid possible problems with sending attachments to multiple recipients, it is anticipated
that this will be the ongoing approach to distributing our posters for local group meetings.
===================================================================
If you have further questions or difficulties in reading this email,
please inform me by return of email. Also, if you would prefer not to
receive such announcements in future or know of individuals who would
like to be added to our local group mailing list, please let me know asap.
We hope that we will have the opportunity to meet you at our forthcoming
meetings.

********** December meeting announcement *************
Escalators, Elevators and Travelators: Occupational mobility
of Scots in South East England* *
PROFESSOR ALLAN FINDLAY, Director of Centre for Applied Population Research, University of Dundee
Tuesday 5 December 2006, 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm (refreshments at 5.45 pm);
members and non-members of the RSS are all most welcome to attend this
meeting. There is no need to register if you are a non-member.
International Centre for Mathematical Sciences, 14 India Street,
Edinburgh EH3 6EZ (http://www.icms.org.uk/)
Abstract
The seminar examines the links between occupational and spatial mobility of Scots
living in the South East of England. Building on Fielding’s (1992) escalator region
hypothesis, as well as later research on return migration flows to the English
regions by Champion (2004), the seminar reports on recent research on longer
distance flows out of the UK’s ‘escalator region’. Using data from the Office
of National Statistics Longitudinal Study (as well as some primary data) and
log-linear modelling, it critiques the escalator region hypothesis and asks
why the Scots population of London is dropping during a decade when
opportunities for occupational mobility into the professional and managerial
classes in the South East is so good.
