Vacancy: Statistician and software developer, VSNi

VSN International is a young and exciting company developing data
analysis, statistics and visualization software. Formed in 2000 as a
spin-off from the Numerical Algorithms Group and Rothamsted Research
(an institute of the BBSRC) it is also part-owned by its staff. Our
core product, GenStat, is the only general-purpose statistics system to
be developed in Europe and has a thriving international user base
across more than 100 countries.
We are looking for a statistician with good programming skills to assist
with the development of new algorithms for statistical analysis and
visualization.
Main Duties
* To work as part of the VSNi technical team, developing GenStat and
other VSNi products
* To implement, test and document new algorithms
* To give presentations at conferences, courses or workshops
* To assist with product support, and undertake consulting tasks
* To build up experience in a particular area of data analysis, data
mining or statistics, and acquire the expertise to drive that area
forward within VSNi
Knowledge and Experience
* A Statistics or Mathematics degree together with substantial knowledge
of statistics, either within the degree or preferably from a subsequent
MSc, PhD or Diploma in Statistics
* Knowledge of at least one programming language; preferably C++ and/or
Fortran
* Experience of computing in windowed environments and preferably also
UNIX (Linux)
* Experience of statistical software and practical data analysis
Skills and attributes
* Ability to understand the mathematical basis of statistical or
data-analysis algorithms
* Ability to break an algorithm down into its basic components for
efficient implementation
* Ability to program meticulously and to design and execute
comprehensive testing programmes
* Ability to design output in forms readily interpretable by
non-specialists
* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and
explain mathematical or statistical concepts clearly to non-specialists
* Ability to learn about and research into new methodology
* Ability to take on-board other peoples' ideas
* Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, supporting
colleagues and accepting advice
* Resilience and cheerfulness under pressure
