Medical Statistician
University College London
We wish to appoint a statistician with a postgraduate qualification in
statistics to work on an MRC-funded project entitled "The analysis of
longitudinal data with varying numbers of measurements". The post holder
will be based at the multidisciplinary UCL Centre for HIV & Sexual Health
Research, but will work closely with the methodology group at the MRC
Clinical Trials Unit and other statisticians. The main area of
responsibility is to review and develop methods to analyse repeated
measurements data where the number of measurements collected for each
patient varies. Whilst there has been much research into methods to analyse
data where some patients drop-out during follow-up, other scenarios are much
less explored. The selection of inappropriate methods in this context can
lead to severe bias, and the work is of great relevance as repeated
measurements studies are widespread in medical research. The methodologies
will be explored through their application to two large studies in HIV
medicine - an observational cohort study and a randomised trial. Further
details of the background to the project and the tasks involved are provided
in the job description.
In addition to this core role, involvement in the statistical design and
analysis of medical research studies, teaching, or in other methodological
projects will be encouraged. Consequently the post can provide an
opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and publications. Should the
post-holder not have a PhD then they may have the opportunity to register
for one in connection with their work on this project. This is a full-time
appointment available for three years. The appointment will be on the
Research Assistant (Grade 6, £21,467 - £24,161 & £2,472 LW) or Research
Fellow Scale, (Grade 7, £25,633 - £28,849 & £2,472). Level and grade
appointed will be dependent on skills and experience. A candidate appointed
at Grade 7 would be expected to work more independently (leading some
aspects of the research), and to take a greater role in the writing of
research papers, than a candidate appointed at Grade 6.
