Details -
Medical Genetics (MedGen) is based within Clinical Pharmacology and
Discovery Medicine Division with responsibility for a wide range of human
research programs combining genetics, and clinical imaging to identify new
therapeutic targets, identify biomarkers of disease progression, and
response to medicines to support GSK drug development. MedGen has the
accountability for the GSK Medical collections in complex diseases of high
priority to the Centre for Excellence Drug Discovery (CEDDs)/Medicines
Development Centres (MDCs). These collections include large family,
case/control and population- based studies through collaborations with a
worldwide network of leading physicians, and access to public and
propriety data sets. MedGen’s role is in the collection/curation of data
and samples, the analysis and interpretation of human genetic and
phenotypic data and their translation of derived results to support the
discovery and development pipeline for a new generation of differentiated
drugs, and in making data in the collections accessible to CEDD - or MDC –
initiated questions.
A Medical Genetic Analyst is required to investigate large-scale
genetic/epidemiological studies in the fields of Neurological and
Gastrointestinal (NGI) disease, supporting primarily Alzheimer’s Disease,
Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease and Irritable Bowel
Syndrome, though the successful applicant may be required to support any
of the disease areas within the NGI portfolio as dictated by project
requirements. There are additional opportunities for exploration of
neurological targets (e.g., migraine) across other medical genetics
collections and to take part in the data curation, exploitation and access-
development for on-going population-based studies.
More specifically, the primary remits for the role will be to:
• Oversee design and analysis plan development for exploratory NGI
studies, ensuring highest impact to the identified needs of the CEDDs /
MDC for the drug development pipeline.
• Develop guidelines for analysis in conjunction with internal and
external project teams, to ensure consistency and efficiency for genetic
studies.
• Work with internal and external collaborators to identify
opportunities for exploratory genetic analyses that will impact the
development of medicines or provide information to support development of
future medicines or agreed requirements from our business partners.
• Work with internal and external (academic) collaborators to
identify and use statistical methods and resources and approaches to
identify markers of disease or other requirements as needed in
case/control, family studies, specifically supporting whole genome scans
or other relevant genetic data
• Responsible for the recruitment / development of multi-
disciplinary staff either in the US or UK within MedGen delivering
analytical and consultative support for design, analysis and
interpretation for genetic studies
