***To all interested in the Edinburgh Local Group of the Royal
Statistical Society (RSS)***
Our second talk of the 2006-2007 session is scheduled to take place at
the earlier time of 5.30 pm on Tuesday 14 November 2006.
The full announcement is provided in text form later in this message.
However, I would also like to draw your attention to the new website for
the Edinburgh local group of the RSS at
http://www.bioss.sari.ac.uk/staff/adam/rsse/
where you can learn more about past and future meetings of our group and
about the workings of the RSS in general. It is anticipated that this
site will provide an alternative route to sharing information with
multiple recipients, given the problems that can arise with e-mail
attachments.
***Posters for advertising***
====================
Please kindly note that for those interested in advertising this meeting,
a poster should be available shortly for downloading in MS Word and pdf formats at the above site.
To avoid possible problems with sending attachments to multiple recipients, it is anticipated
that this will be the ongoing approach to distributing our posters for local group meetings.
===================================================================
If you have further questions or difficulties in reading this email,
please inform me by return of email. Also, if you would prefer not to
receive such announcements in future or know of individuals who would
like to be added to our local group mailing list, please let me know asap.
We hope that we will have the opportunity to meet you at our forthcoming
meetings.

Abstract
This workshop session will focus upon the experiences of young statisticians working or studying within Scotland,
and is particularly aimed at students and at those who are just beginning a career in statistics. Recently qualified
statisticians who work in the Scottish Executive, NHS Scotland and Heriot-Watt University will each give a
short talk in which they outline their motivation for entering the profession, the challenges that they have faced,
and their aspirations for the future. Janet Lindley will then outline the ways in which the Royal Statistical Society
is able to support and encourage students and young statisticians, and will talk about current initiatives to increase
the involvement and profile of young people within the society. Finally, there will be ample opportunity for open
discussion of the issues raised by the speakers.
