A Postdoctoral research fellow (statistics) is available at *The
Centre of Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES), Dept. of
Biology, *Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo
A summary of the project is given below. For further information, see
http://www.admin.uio.no/opa/ledige-stillinger/2006/vit/postdocresearchfellowCEES-06-13939.html
The postdoctoral position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council.
The project group includes statisticians and ecologists at CEES, working
in collaboration with researchers in Bergen, Canada and USA. The project
aims at further developing statistical methodology for handling a
variety of data in an integrated analysis. Likelihood methods will be
coupled with numerical techniques and simulation to obtain Fisherian
confidence distributions for key parameters in both applications, to be
compared to Bayesian posterior distributions. Extensive data are
available for Canadian hare and lynx, and for bowhead whales off Alaska.
Both systems are of general interest, and we aim at substantial results
of broad interest. The postdoc will primarily work with the hare-lynx
system. The extensive data on lynx tracks in the snow are informative on
individual predation behavior. The ambition is to combine likelihood
components from (i) these micro data, (ii) data on snow conditions,
(iii) climate data, (iv) absolute and relative abundance estimates from
surveys, and (v) extensive trap data on hare and lynx. In this
integrated analysis issues such as invisible barriers due to environment
and population dynamics will be investigated. The mix in the project of
fundamental statistical inference issues and development of applied
methodology for studying the hare-lynx system and also the status of
bowhead whales should be statistically challenging, and lead to
publications in high ranking statistics and science journals. The aim
for the postdoctoral position is for the holder to qualify for top
academic positions.
