Following the success of last year's event, the Royal Statistical Society will be collaborating with the OR Society on a second joint careers open day next month!
If you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student of Mathematics/Statistics and thinking about your future career/the job market, this free event is for you. If you know of students who might be interested in attending, please do pass this invitation on.
(If you work for a company or institution which employs statisticians and would like to consider running a stand at the event, at the time of writing there are still some free stand spaces. Please see the registration form at www.rss.org.uk/careersopenday).
Participants will be able to visit stands run by a range of employers and postgraduate course providers in our 'market place' and also attend a packed programme of plenary talks and breakout sessions led by statisticians (and operational researchers) in various sectors. The programme will provide information about how to get started and useful insight into what working as a statistician is really like.
Standholders will include: QinetiQ, Nexia Solutions, Capgemini, Dstl, PA Consulting, British Energy, CORDA, RBS Insurance (Direct Line), British Airways, British Energy, the Government Statistical Services (GSS), Government OR Service, Quintiles, Pfizer UK, GlaxoSmithKline and the University of the West of England, University of Bristol, Aston University and the University of Warwick inter alia.
Informal breakout sessions will include presentations by statisticians working in the pharmaceutical sector (GlaxoSmithKline), in medical research (the Medical Research Council), in the energy industry (Shell Research Ltd), in environmental consultancy (Risk Initiative and Statistical Consultancy Unit, Warwick), in market research (mmr Making More of Research) and for the Government Statistical Services (Department for Work and Pensions).
For more details see www.rss.org.uk/careersopenday. Whilst booking is not essential, it helps us to plan the day and all those who let us know in advance that they will be coming will be offered free lunch. To book your place, please e-mail Debra Hurcomb at the RSS: [log in to unmask]
We very much look forward to seeing you on the day.
