CSIRO is Australia's largest scientific research agency, delivering
outcomes of benefit to the
Australian economy, society and environment through excellence in
science and technology
and in the provision of advice and services.
Minerals Down Under (MDU) is a multidivisional program which aims to
identify and solve
scientific and technical challenges that inhibit the future
competitiveness of Australia's
resource base in an increasingly globalised industry, thereby securing
ongoing national benefit
to Australia as a result of its comparative advantage in minerals. A
major MDU activity involves
drilling several hundred metres below the Earth’s surface at
strategically chosen locations and
using CSIRO’s HyLoggerTM technology to collect and then analyse tens of
thousands of reflectance
spectra per drill hole; see
www.csiro.au/csiro/content/standard/ps1y6,,.html. The spectral
analyses enable mapping of minerals down and across drill holes, which
is important for both
exploration and mining purposes. The CSIRO Divisions of Mathematical and
Information Sciences (CMIS),
and Exploration and Mining (CEM) have an ongoing collaboration as part
of this activity. In
particular, CMIS develops sophisticated algorithms for the compositional
analysis of mineral
spectra produced by the HyLoggerTM instruments and converts them to
efficient C code for
implementation in a DEM package used by both DEM scientists and their
customers. Novel algorithms
are usually published.
We are seeking to appoint a statistician/programmer to our Sydney
office, who will participate in
both the development and implementation of the algorithms. The position
provides an opportunity
for applicants who are interested in developing and applying
sophisticated statistical methodologies
to solve challenging problems of importance to Australia's future. The
position would be of
particular interest to individuals seeking to obtain a real world
perspective prior to commencing
a PhD.
The position is available from late 2006 or early 2007.
