Applied Statistician
Biomathematics & Statistics Scotland (BioSS)
BioSS seeks an applied statistician to fill an intellectually
challenging vacancy located at the Scottish Crop Research
Institute in Dundee. The post is devoted to statistical
aspects of the EU SAFEFOODS project, including the specification
and implementation of statistical protocols and the development
of appropriate new methods of analysis.
The project involves a wide variety of statistical work including:
* design & analysis of experiments to compare different methods of
food production;
* multivariate analysis of metabolomic, proteomic & transcriptomic
profiles to characterise and distinguish among production methods;
* organisation of simple databases to allow experimental results to
be used automatically in risk models.
SAFEFOODS (http://www.safefoods.nl/default.aspx) is about promoting food
safety through a new integrated risk analysis approach for foods. There
are more than 30 participating organisations in total, and the work is
divided across six Workpackages. This post is in Workpackage One,
'Comparative safety evaluation of breeding approaches and production
practices deploying high and low input systems'. Workpackage One has 9
partners with the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) as workpackage
co-ordinator.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants should have well-developed technical skills as well as good
communication skills to enable them to collaborate with scientists on
site and in other European countries. An ability to convince
collaborators of the merits of adhering to efficient design and
standardised reporting procedures will be required to ensure
quantitative aspects of the project run smoothly.
Candidates should have a good degree and at least 2 years postgraduate
experience (PhD or MSc preferred) with a strong component of statistics.
The appointee will be offered an indefinite contract, and will start as
soon as possible. Salary on appointment will be in the range £23,000 -
£26,000 (BBSRC Band 6), pay award pending. Funding for this post has
been obtained via the SAFEFOODS project until March 2008: we anticipate
being in a position to obtain additional funding to continue the post
beyond that date.
