THE INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH (University of London)
FUNDED PHD STUDENTSHIP IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
Offered for 4 years, with a generous stipend plus research funding;
available from October 2006
The Institute of Cancer Research is offering a fully funded PhD
studentship in the Section of Epidemiology, including tuition fees,
stipend and research funding. The PhD will centre on data available
from a large on-going epidemiological study of the causation of breast
cancer - the Breakthrough Generations Study - but there will also be
potential for the student to collect additional data for the PhD
project.
The studentship will give the opportunity to partake in the scientific
life of the Section, which covers a wide range of epidemiological
studies of cancer aetiology and screening, with strong connections to
the several leading genetic research groups within The Institute. The
student will also be involved in the wider scientific academic life of
The Institute, which has a friendly, supportive and enthusiastic
research environment, with a structured and well-organised PhD
programme. The successful applicant is likely to have an MSc in medical
statistics, epidemiology or a related subject, to have good analytical
skills, and to be interested in, but not necessarily have experience of,
cancer research.
The Section of Epidemiology is housed in a new purpose-built building
on the Sutton campus of The Institute of Cancer Research/Royal Marsden
Hospital. The Institute is a college of the University of London and is
a world-class cancer research organisation with HEFCE RAE ratings of
international excellence across all of its research programmes. In
partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, The Institute
forms the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, dedicated to
research that extends from epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology,
through drug discovery and development, to cancer diagnosis and patient
treatment.
Enquiries about the studentship should be made to Dr ME Jones or
Professor AJ Swerdlow, by telephone on 0208 722 4192, or by writing to
Section of Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology Building, The Institute of
Cancer Research, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5NG. Further information can be
gained from www.icr.ac.uk/studentship.html, to which applications,
including a CV and names of referees, should be made online.
