Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 2JQ UK
http://www.rothamsted.bbsrc.ac.uk/careers/vacancies/Vacancies.html
We are recruiting a new head of statistics to succeed Professor Robin Thompson, who retired recently. Responsibilities will include developing a research programme and providing the necessary guidance and support to a team of five consultant statisticians currently led by Dr Sue Welham.
Biological research at Rothamsted covers a large range of disciplines related to crop science and sustainable agriculture, encompassing quantitative post-genomic studies of crop biology in the laboratory linked to the Rothamsted "classical" experiments through to invertebrate ecology and soil physics. We also have an increasing commitment to the development of non-food crops especially for biomass as an alternative energy source. There are consequently many opportunites for innovative statistical research at Rothamsted. In recent years, the core of Rothamsted statistics research has been mixed modelling methods; however it would not be essential to continue this theme. A research programme could be developed in any area of statistics that is relevant to Rothamsted science.
The preferred candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) with at least a further 6 years applied statistics research experience in biology or a related discipline with a publications record to match. Important aspects of the job include raising the external scientific profile of the group, developing research collaborations with other Rothamsted scientists and mentoring members of the statistical consultancy team. The candidate should therefore be able to show that they have the necesssary interpersonal skills and supervisory/management experience.
The salary will be negotiable depending on the candidate's experience but will be within the range of £34,692 to £48,447 per annum.
Apply by application form only, available with further particulars on the Rothamsted Careers website http://www.rothamsted.bbsrc.ac.uk/careers/vacancies/Vacancies.html Job reference: 934.
Alternatively, suitably qualified candidates can also contact Professor Chris Rawlings (chris.rawlings_at_ bbsrc.ac.uk).
