UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH - RESEARCH POST in
THE NATURE AND EVALUATION OF EVIDENCE
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research post in the nature
and evaluation of evidence within the School of Mathematics, and as part
of the Joseph Bell Centre for Forensic Statistics and Legal Reasoning,
to develop a) a body of mathematical theory analogous to theories from
philosophy and epistemology that analyses reasoning with uncertain and
heterogeneous evidence and b) to establish sampling strategies and
quantity estimation procedures based on likelihood ratios and sequential
probability ratio tests, subject to tests of reliability and legal
admissibility. Applicants should have a good Honours degree in a
mathematical subject and a PhD in statistics or related subjects, with
an interest in legal reasoning, or legal theory, broadly understood. The
post is funded by the ESRC with Professor Colin Aitken as the Principal
Investigator and Mr. Burkhard Schafer (Law) as co-investigator. The
post has arisen because of the resignation of the current post-doctoral
research assistant to take up a permanent appointment elsewhere.
