EPSRC CASE PhD Studentship at Strathclyde University, Glasgow
Reliability and Maintainability modelling of censored data
This project will develop statistical and operations research methods to support decision-making for typical reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) problems, focussing particularly on the oil and gas sector and energy generation. The key innovative element of this proposal is the development of new uncertainty modelling tools that link decision theory (value of information) and data censoring to RAM modelling. This will provide a key "missing link" to the use of computer based maintenance records in updating information about equipment performance.
Applications are invited to carry out this project, which will be supervised jointly by Prof Tim Bedford and Prof Lesley Walls. It is a full-time PhD place, based at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. The studentship is worth £12,000 per year plus fees for a UK national, or fees-only for an EU-national, and also provides a training budget. The duration is 3 years.
Strathclyde has a lively group working in risk and reliability (http://www.managementscience.org). Three members of staff are particularly active in this area: Prof Tim Bedford, Prof Lesley Walls and Dr John Quigley. In addition, Visiting Professor Joseph Fragola is an internationally recognized expert in the area of risk and reliability. There are currently 5 PhD students working in the risk and reliability in the department. The department is recognized internationally as one of the key groups contributing to new theory and industrial practice, and has active collaborative links with other research groups internationally. In the summer of next year it will host the Mathematical Methods in Reliability Conference 2007, which will bring many of the well-known international experts to Glasgow. This is therefore an ideal opportunity for the PhD to establish contacts throughout the international Reliability community.
For more information about the studentship please contact Tim Bedford at [log in to unmask] We are looking for a numerate graduate (or someone graduating this summer), with at least a 2.1 degree having a strong statistical or mathematical component. To apply, please send a letter of application and a CV by 31 August 2006 to Tim Bedford, Dept of Management Science, 40 George St, Glasgow, G1 1QE, or by email to the above address.
