Below is is an advert for 2 PhD studentships. These relate to a large multi-institution EPSRC project that Tim Bedford ([log in to unmask]) is coordinating. The frist is held in in Sheffield and Bristol and the second in Sheffield and Nottingham
EPSRC PhD studentship on "Coupled models: Expert Judgement, Emulators and Model Uncertainty" to be held at the Universities of Sheffield and Bristol.
As part of a new EPSRC funded project encompassing researchers from the Universities of Strathclyde, Sheffield, Bristol and Nottingham, a PhD studentship is available which will be held between Sheffield and Bristol.
The studentship will look applications of modern ways of building statistical approximations of complex numerical models, called emulators, aerospace modeling problems. Two PhD's will work together with a research assistant on this project, the other PhD being appointed to do parallel research in a different application area (environmental modelling). The PhD students will spend their first year together working at Sheffield University under Dr Jeremy Oakley to gain experience in using statistical emulators. The holder of this studentship will then move to Bristol University to work with Dr Sondipon Adhikari on applications to helicopter dynamics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. The other will move to Nottingham University to work with Prof Andrew Cliffe on applications in groundwater modeling in collaboration with the Environment Agency.
The project will last for 3.5 years - the stipend covers this full period - during which time the PhD will interact with staff from all 4 institutions and with the project stakeholders. This project arose out of the EPSRC IDEAS Sandpit on Risk, where it was the top ranked proposal.
Applications are invited for this studentship, which carries a stipend of £12,300 pa plus fees, by 31 August 2006. Applications, including a full CV and names of 2 academic referees, should be sent to Dr Sondipon Adhikari [[log in to unmask]]. We are looking for someone with a first degree (of at least 2.1 or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related subject. Note that the normal EPSRC eligibility criteria apply for this studentship.
Informal enquiries can be made to Sondipon Adhikari [[log in to unmask]] or tel: +44 (0) 117 928 7694]. More information on the whole project is available at www.managementscience.org/emulator.aspx
