The Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) seeks to
recruit a Principal Statistician to meet Institute-wide requirements for
statistical consultancy and innovative data analysis. The job will have
the following elements:
1. Providing specialised and general statistical support and training
(60%), including:
Design, commission and, where appropriate, teach courses aimed at
bringing statistical competence of Institute staff up to a minimum
necessary level (eg regression, ANOVA etc)
Advise on appropriate software and hardware tools
Validate and approve Standard Operating Procedures
Give project advice and statistics sign-off for funding applications
Provide specialist advice for Institute QA procedures
Provide specialist advice for Institute Ethical Review process
2. Application of, and innovation in, statistical approaches and data
analysis methods (40%), including:
Lead and manage Institute Statistics effort
Develop productive interfaces with scientific, informatics and
modelling programmes
Develop interactions with external organisations to further IGERs
data analysis capabilities
Establish an international reputation through publications and
attendance at meetings
Lead the development of new projects and grant applications to
develop statistically innovative approaches for analysis of IGER data
The postholder will be based at Aberystwyth, but will need to undertake
some travel between the IGER sites in Wales and England.
The successful candidate will have a first or upper 2nd class honours
degree in an appropriate statistical, mathematical or science discipline
and a recognised statistical qualification. Applicants are expected to have
an extensive publication record, a minimum of 5 years relevant
postgraduate experience in statistical consultancy and/or research and a
considerable professional reputation. A proven track record in the
presentation and publication of data is essential. Ability to collaborate
with staff in different disciplines essential. Must be highly motivated
with good oral and written communication skills. Experience of working in a
similar capacity in a biological, environmental or related research
environment would be highly desirable.
Salary Scale: Band 4, up to £40,547 pa depending upon the professional
experience and publication record of the successful candidate.
