Summary
Finding appropriate doses from early phase clinical trials is essential for
efficient drug development. Conventional designs can take a long time to
complete, and tend to concentrate effort at doses which are later rejected.
They do not include formal procedures for deciding when to stop nor for
making the final dose selection. Recently, adaptive designs have been
proposed to speed up dose-finding procedures and to focus more exclusively
on the target dose. In spite of the advances that have been made with this
methodology, many important issues remain, including details of how to
implement the methodology in practice. The aim of this symposium is to
present recent advances and to discuss how to overcome problems that may
arise in implementation.
