ROYAL FREE AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE MEDICICAL SCHOOL
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY CARE & POPULATION SCIENCES
Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Primary Care Epidemiology
(Hampstead Campus)
This is a new post in PCPS, which is one of the largest and most
prestigious departments of its kind in Europe, with research strengths in
primary care, epidemiology, health services and social sciences research.
The post was created to develop and maintain a programme of epidemiological
research in primary care, focussed on the secondary analyses of large NHS
clinical databases with an emphasis on the General Practice Research
Database (GPRD). The post holder will work collaboratively with a group of
primary care and epidemiology researchers based at the Hampstead Campus
working on secondary analysis of the GPRD, and will play an active role in
the multidisciplinary research of the Department. The post holder will
also work across the interface between PCPS, other departments in UCL and
the MRC’s General Practice Research Framework (GPRF), as well as with other
institutions, capitalizing on the opportunities for research of national
and international importance offered in part through such links. The post
holder will contribute to department’s teaching programme.
The GPRD is the world's largest computerised database of anonymised
longitudinal medical records from primary care. Currently data are being
collected on over 3 million active patients (and on as many as 9 million in
total) from almost 400 primary care practices throughout the UK.It is the
largest and most comprehensive source of data of its kind and is used
worldwide for research by the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research
organisations, regulators, government departments and leading academic
institutions. PCPS has secondary access to the GPRD supported by staff from
statistics, epidemiology and primary care who are experienced in using the
database to address research questions in health services research.
Applicants to this post may or may not be medically qualified, but ideally
will hold or be close to finishing a higher research degree and be able to
demonstrate extensive experience in primary care epidemiology using large
datasets. Candidates not holding a PhD/MD degree must be within 3 months
of completing or able to demonstrate the equivalent in research experience,
including publication output and grant income. Wide experience in primary
care epidemiology, proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality
original research, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals,
success in obtaining grant funding, and experience of teaching at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels are essential.
