SENIOR LECTURER IN HEALTH STATISTICS - M1091
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM, UK
Department of Public Health and Epidemiology
Division of Primary Care, Public and Occupational Health
The University seeks an able medical statistician with a track record of both published research and teaching in medical statistics to join the new Health Statistics Group within the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology led by Professor Jon Deeks.
The successful applicant will contribute statistical expertise to existing health research programmes active within the Department, and be encouraged to develop his/her own applied statistical research programmes to compliment the existing research work of the Health Statistics Group. Applied statistical research is interpreted broadly to include the development and evaluation of methods for designing, analysing, reporting and interpreting investigations into all aspects of human health.
The post holder will be expected to be a focus for excellence in teaching to assure quality of undergraduate and postgraduate statistical teaching within the medical school, so that students are inspired by the clarity and rigour of statistics and appreciate the genuine contributions it can make to human welfare. The department plans to establish postgraduate courses in statistics - including a combined MSc/PhD, building on existing modules in its MPH and MSc in HTA courses.
The appointee will join a stimulating research and teaching environment of the many research statisticians, epidemiologists and health services researchers in the department and in departments within the School.
The Health Statistics Group has particular strong research interests in the design and analysis of evaluation of diagnostic technologies and health interventions, including research into methods of meta-analysis. It maintains strong links (including jointly held grants) with the MRC Health Services Research Collaboration in Bristol, the Centre for Statistics in Medicine and the Centre for Evidence-based Medicine in Oxford, and Departments of Public Health, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Universities of Amsterdam and Sydney. The group takes a leading methodological role in the international Cochrane Collaboration, and advises the DOH Health Technology Assessment Programme on studies of test evaluation. The post-holder would be expected to play some part in these collaborations.
Starting salary is in the range of £38,772 to £44,947 a year (potential progression on performance once in post to £47,685). The post is a permanent full time position (part time negotiable).
