PhD CASE studentship in Newcastle
An EPSRC Mathematics Case Project between the School of Mathematics & Statstics and CPACT in the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials at the University of Newcastle, and BP Refining Technology.
Supervisors: Dr. J Q Shi (School of Maths & Stats), Professor A. J Morris (CPACT, School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials), Dr. Z Rawi (BP Refining Technology)
Applications are invited from UK or EU candidates for a 3.5-year phd studentship concerning statistical theory and methodology for dynamic non-parametric prediction focusing in particular on complex engineering systems with large input covariate dimensions. Full tuition fees and research expenses will be covered, and for eligible candidates a stipend starting at £15,300 p.a. (including £3,000 provided by BP) will be available. Applicants should have a good Bachelors or Masters degree in statistics, or in a mathematical subject with substantial statistics content. A starting date of 1 September 2006 is anticipated.
The student will be based in the School of Mathematics & Statstics, and will be supervised by Dr. J Q Shi and Professor A. J Morris with Dr. Z Rawi from BP Refining Technology. The student will be expected to spend some time at BP sites. The University of Newcastle has a strong tradition of applied methodological research in statistics and the statistics section was rated 5A in RAE2001. The School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials was also rated 5 in the RAE2001 with CPACT being rated 5*.
