MRC HSRC Research Fellow/ Senior Research Fellow: Statistician
The successful applicant will join a team of statisticians working in the
Medical Research Council's Health Services Research Collaboration (HSRC).
The HSRC is located in the Department of Social Medicine at the University
of Bristol (5* rated research department), with collaborators from other
national and international centres linked via multi-disciplinary research
and training programmes.
This full-time post will be half-time working on the programme "Best use of
randomised evidence", in close collaboration with the MRC Biostatistics
Unit in Cambridge. This will involve developing models to explore sources
of bias, heterogeneity and inconsistency in mixed treatment comparison meta-
analysis, where there may be multiple outcome measures. A key consideration
of this project will be the use of such models in decision analysis, and to
work towards recommendations on how to deal with study quality and
heterogeneity in health technology appraisals carried out by the National
Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). There will be
collaboration and regular meetings with the group in Cambridge, who will be
working on related issues concerning bias.
The other half of this post will be working on existing lines of research
within the programme "Formal methods for multi-parameter evidence synthesis
and their role in epidemiology and economic evaluation". This will in part
be flexible according to the interests and experience of the successful
applicant, but drawn from the following topics: (1) Methods for Expected
Value of Information calculations applied (a) on an HTA project on
screening for Early Onset Group B Streptococcus; and (b) to apply
multivariate Bayesian updating techniques to the design of a multi-arm
trial; (2) Multiple Outcome Synthesis (a) Mapping Patient Reported Outcomes
(PRO) into QALY measures; (b) Multiple formats for reporting the same
outcome; and (c) Surrogate outcome meta-analysis.
The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of epidemiology and an
understanding of medical statistics and clinical epidemiology, as well as
excellent statistical modelling skills with experience of application to
research. Experience of decision analysis or health economics would be an
advantage.
We offer a competitive remuneration package for the ideal candidate.
Starting salary will be range £29,378-£38,646 per annum. There is also a
generous holiday entitlement (6 weeks annual leave and 10.5 days public
holidays) and an excellent pension scheme.
