School of Mathematics and Statistics
Research Fellow in Statistics
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications are invited for a research fellow for 30 months, starting
on 1st Octover 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter, to develop new
statistical techniques to analyse complex ecological data, and apply
these to demographic studies of grey seals in the UK.
The research project, under the supervision of Dr. Ruth King (Centre for
Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling) and Dr. Paddy
Pomeroy (Sea Mammal Research Unit), will address questions relating to
heterogeneity within a population, using an individual-based long-term
dataset. The work will focus on developing new methodology to analyse
real ecological data, including the development of complex hierarchical
modelling structures and use of Bayesian computational techniques for
model fitting and selection.
Candidates should hold, or expect to obtain shortly, a PhD in Statistics
or in a related subject with substantial statistical component.
Knowledge of Bayesian methods and Markov chain Monte Carlo, previous
experience of a high level computer language (such as C or Fortran) and
programming skills are desirable. Familiarity with capture-recapture
models and an interest in statistical ecology will be a distinct advantage.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Ruth King (e-mail:
