Width / style of the seat can be used as a way of detering people from lying
on them - too narrow and we fear we may fall off, or having perch seats (as
in some bus shelters). Also the provision of intermediate arm rests deter
lying down. However, bear in mind the location in that whilst perch seats
may work in bus shelters, they are not supportive for a number of different
users in other settings.

It might be worth looking at the architect Will Alsop's work in Peckham and
an installation that functions as a giant barometer and seating and covered
area in Peckham also near Will's Library building.

I am a finalist student of Industrial Design at Loughborough University, and
I'm looking at designing a heated public seating installation for my final
major project.
One of the main issues with this is the potential use of the seat by the
homeless, and the subsequent disapproval that this may cause when in general
use.
Does anyone know any good strategies for "discouraging" this kind of use
(other than material choice and shape), or any information on how this issue
is perceived?
Also I need to plan the energy usage of the installation, does anyone know
any good sources of statistical information on public space usage (eg, bus
stations, city centres) over 24 hour periods? I'm looking for at least one
example to base my calculations on.
King regards,
Eleanor Hyde
