Hello,
I am an Occupational Therapist by professional background, presently
studying MSc Inclusive Environments at the University of Reading. I have
previously assisted in several manual handling training sessions that have
focussed on handling disabled people. Recently I have been approached by
an Indian airline to train their staff in assisting disabled people in
transferring on/off aisle chairs and passenger seats. Part of training is
also to include training in wheelchair stowage, this they insist is
important since they have incurred several delays and pay-outs due to
wheelchairs damaged by baggage handlers. Now the former part of the
training is rather routine for me but I have no experience in managing
manual handling in constrined spaces such as aircraft hold.
Manual handling in the hold is a relatively tricky issue as kneeling/
stooping can not be avoided due to the limited headroom - thereby making
it impossible to meet the 1st rule itself of keeping the load close to the
body !!
I wonder if any one can help me here - I have already checked the HSE
website and it has given me some useful (but basic) informaiton on the
topic of manual handling in the hold.
I love to hear from anyone who may have experience in this field or have
come across any similar presentation or guidance notes that may help me.
Thanks,
Vic
