Hi Susan,
Sorry I mustn't have written the e-mail very clearly, the loft is only
to be used for storage purposes. The occupant had asked our Building
Control Officer if a full stair could be fitted but he recommended that
they didn't do this if the loft was to be used for storage, so we are
trying to find a ladder with handrails suitable for ambulant disabled
people so that the occupant can access the loft. I don't know much
about the rest of the Building Regulations apart from Part M but our BCO
had asked if I'd ever heard of this particular loft ladder?
Kind regards
Louise

Hi Louise
Sorry can't help with your query - but interesting to note that up here
we would grant permission for the installation of a loft ladder only if
the loft was being used for storage purposes (i.e. only flooring and not
walls lined) however the area would still have to meet the Standards in
terms of insulation, ventilation and emergency escape window etc.

Subject: Loft space ladders for use by ambulant disabled people
Hi all,
There is a new bungalow being built in our area, one of the occupants is
ambulant disabled and wants access to the loft space for storage
purposes.
Due to the Building Regulations a full stair cannot be fitted without
doing
a full loft conversion.
I've heard about a wide loft access ladder complete with handrails that
comes out of a specially designed wider loft hatch like a concertina and
is
easier for an ambulant disabled person to use as oppose to a ladder.
Does
anyone have any information on this product?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Louise Thomson
