Here in East Ayrshire Council, training for taxi drivers was instigated
some years ago and was delivered by the local disability forums for a
small fee. I understand that the training involved the use of
simulation spectacles and general disability awareness. Unfortunately
there has been a break in the training but I understand that the
licensing section is actively trying to resurrect this. Unsure what the
procedure was via the Licensing Committee though.

Subject: Hackney Carraige Driver Training
In December 2006 Part 3 DDA exemption is likely to be lifted from all
transport vehicles. I am assuming local Licensing departments will be
encouraging Hackney Carriage drivers to take up disability training
specific
to their employment duties. Licensing departments impose conditions to
cover
other legislation and I suspect they will need to follow suite after
December 2006.
Is there a Licensing Department, that makes it a condition of their
Hackney
license, that disability awareness training is undertaken? If so, how
was it
funded and on what grounds did it get passed through the Licensing
Committee?
We currently provide disability awareness training for Private Hire but
have
not yet implemented it for Hackney Carriages.
Any help or advice would be appreciated
Thanks,
John
