There have been several research projects run by the Helen Hamlyn
Research Centre on these very issues. There is a packaging
organisation, I think its called the Institute of Packaging
Manufacturers, they've been involved in some way as sponsors of the
Research Associates at HHRC. This whole matter has been explored and
brought to the attention of various food retailers too. These projects
have been going on for at least 5 years.
It seems nothing has changed.
This is very disheartening for those of us who endeavour to illustrate
the difficulties people have with current packaging and to offer
solutions.
Some will argue that to ensure food safety and hygiene standards are
maintained the packaging has to be as secure as possible - they're the
one who are afraid of being sued if a consumer gets food poisoning or
finds foreign objects in the food.
Perhaps if, every time someone is injured by packaging, the provision
company and the retailers are sued for damages, they will change their
approach. It seems to me there could be hundred of small claims against
them every week.
A bit radical I know but we've tried the education/design route with no
lasting impact.
