Hi Marcus,
This is a tricky one because of differing views of what is a successful
consultation. An example would be where I live the Local Authority claims to
have successfully consulted with disabled people on several issues. Yet
disabled people are furious that the outcome makes it clear that our views
have been pretty much ignored. Disabled people sometimes find that they are
out of pocket because events may not be resourced. This scenario is not
uncommon around the country.
Where there has been a degree of satisfaction for disabled people this has
been where disabled people have been actively involved in the process and
the involvement has been resourced. I do not want to speak for Manchester
Disabled People's Access Group - but perhaps they could be asked if they
were satisfied with the outcome of the Manchester Design for Access 2 Manual
guide where they worked in partnership with Manchester City Council.
From disabled people's viewpoint success in a slightly different area would
be where Local Authorities stop charging for Community Care Services
following consultations with disabled people. This has happened in Derby and
Hammersmith & Fulham, it is notable that in both these place there are
strong organisations of disabled people that work with the Council on
delivering Direct Payments (in lieu of community care services). Many local
authorities would not think this a success because they would consider the
loss of income to be a bad thing. Where I live following consultation where
disabled people said they want the charges stopped, the Local Authority put
them up so some people have to pay about £160 to live in their own homes.
Regards,
Pam

Subject: Community consultation
Hi everyone
I am trying to locate examples of community consultation that have involved
disabled people, preferably successful consultations, but interested in ones
that went wrong as well. Has anyone on the list got any contacts or
experience themselves?
Regards
Marcus
