Lecturer in German
The Department of German at Leeds invites applications
for a post on the Lecturer A scale. The post is
available from January 2007. The field is open,
within the broad area of German Studies, but
preference may be given to those who can offer
research and teaching specialisms in one of the
following areas:
· Linguistics (particularly sociolinguistics,
text/discourse analysis, language and culture)
· German Cultural Studies
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, be
developing a publication profile appropriate for
submission in the next RAE exercise, and will be able
to demonstrate effective teaching skills and a range
of delivery techniques and assessment methods.

Job Description
You will be expected:
· to teach German language across the
range of BA programmes
· to deliver ‘content’ modules in German
at all levels
· to develop imaginative and innovative
modules within the Department’s curriculum
· to undertake administrative duties as
required by your line manager
· to be involved in web-based and
autonomous learning modules of the SMLC. Appropriate
training will be provided if necessary
· to contribute to taught postgraduate
teaching on the School of Modern Languages & Cultures'
MAs
· to supervise MA and PhD students in the
area of your research expertise and in other areas as
appropriate;
· to contribute to the research culture
of the Department, the School, and the Faculty of
Arts;
Person Specification
· a doctorate in a relevant field
· an excellent first degree
· a research profile appropriate for
submission in the next RAE exercise
· a record of generating grant income
and/or a clear vision of how you might generate such
income in the future, including major grants
· a record of organising conferences
leading to high-quality edited volumes and/or a clear
vision of how you might contribute to the Department’s
efforts to consolidate itself as a centre of
excellence in research in German Studies
· a clear vision of developments in
research in German Studies nationally and
internationally and an understanding of the broader
research environment within which you operate
· relevant teaching experience in German
Language, and a strong commitment to developing
teaching skills
· a broad understanding of German Studies
as an academic discipline
· a readiness to work co-operatively and
flexibly with colleagues
· a willingness to develop skills
appropriate for the web-based delivery of modules
· a readiness to take on administrative
and developmental responsibilities associated with
research and teaching, as appropriate
· native-speaker or near-native speaker
command of the German and English languages
· a genuine commitment to German as a
subject of study and field of research
