Workshop
Goethe's Poetry
Translation and Transmission
Friday, 24 February 2006
Venue:
Room ST274/275 [Second Floor at Stewart House]
Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU
Convenors: Martin Swales and Matthew Bell (London)
This workshop will be held in memory of John Whaley,
the acclaimed translator of Goethe's poetry, who
passed away on 23 June 2005. Whaley was also a
long-standing member of the English Goethe Society
Council, and a Friend of Germanic Studies at the
Institute. He had studied German at University College
London, and the impact made on him by Mary Wilkinson's
teaching of Goethe was as profound as it was enduring.
Despite his academic distinction, he became a civil
servant, working at the Board of Trade, a career of
which Goethe, who recognized the importance of
administrative service to the community, would have
approved. The title of this workshop is deliberately
all-inclusive - Whaley would not have wished a theme
to be imposed on the event. Contributions will be an
informal airing of thoughts, introducing a discussion
of Goethe's poetry in general, of specific poems or
groups of poems, of Goethe's diction as a poet, and of
his translatability or untranslatability.
