This video conference will be held on 10 March 2006.

b. BOLOGNA PROCESS - Seminar
         Senate House, University of London
         12 May 2006
This seminar will report on the latest developments in the Bologna
Process relating to the 'framework of qualifications' and will explore
some of the key issues relating to the implementation in the UK and
across Europe. The event will have a particular focus on the Humanities
and will include reports on the latest discussion on this issue at
European level. It will be of interest to senior managers,
international officers, curriculum developers and subject practitioners
in the Humanities. The seminar will be free of charge and registration
should be made via the online form on the Subject Centre website at

c. SUBJECT CENTRE CONFERENCE 2006
         University of Cardiff, Wales
         6-7 July 2006

2. NEW Subject Centre CD 'WHY STUDY LANGUAGES?'
The Subject Centre has launched a new CD designed to excite, educate
and encourage young people to continue with their language learning in
KS4 and beyond. The CD is divided into two parts:'The Language Lab' is
aimed at putils in KS3 and KS4 and 'Why study languages' is aimed at
pupils in KS4 and post-16. There are quizzes, powerpoint presentations
and much much more AND it comes with its own poster! Further
information about the CD and ordering procedure can be found on the

3. OTHER EVENTS
a. LANGUAGE WORLD
         University of Manchester
         7-8 April 2006
How do we work together to face the challenges of teaching languages in
the UK in the 21st century? How do we ensure that everyone is offered
appropriate language learning opportunities at all phases in their
education? What are best ways to keep language learners engaged
throughout their lives? Whats new in the world of language teaching and
learning? Where do you go to keep on top of your profession?

        CALR CONFERENCE OF THE LANGUAGE LEARNING AND TEACHING SPECIAL
INTEREST GROUP
The BAAL Language Learning and Teaching SIG CONFERENCE will be hosted
by The Centre for Applied Language Research at Southampton University
on 19-20 April 2006.

This is a reminder that the deadline for paper proposals is FRIDAY 03
February.

The conference title is: "Language Use, Language Processing and
Language Learning: Interfaces in Instructed Second Language Learning".

5. SURVEYS
a. FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ABROAD
This is a call for participation in a survey being undertaken on behalf
of the European Commission which seeks to obtain information from
teachers of foreign languages on the advantages and drawbacks of
teaching abroad for longer periods, say from a term to several years.
The project website can be accessed through
http://www.uoc.edu/in3/mobility and the questionnaire will be on-line
until 28 February 2006.

b. YEAR ABROAD
          Student fees for Modern Languages during their year abroad
In response to requests from Language Departments, the LLAS Subject
Centre wishes to gather and disseminate information on fee structures
for students during their period of residence abroad. Please note that
any information we receive will be treated in confidence and will not
be attributed to a particular institution as you may not have published
your policy at this stage. We are interested in collating the variety
of policies adopted so that current practice can be shared across the

6. Updating of AULC STATISTICS
This item is for the attention of University Language Centres
Colleagues are reminded that AULC are currently updating statistics on
the numbers of students on IWLPs. As these students represent a
significant proportion of the total number of language students, this
information is particarly important. Please email your current numbers
