Dear all,
Many congratulations to Teresa Ludden, Beate Müller and the German
Department in Newcastle on Saturday's Annual Meeting! It was an
excellent event with a fantastic turn out. There was a wide variety of
papers from the medieval period to the present, all of a very high
quality and they generated as lively discussion as always! In due
course, the abstracts will be available on the WIGS website, along with
the Business Meeting minutes.
Thank you very much to everyone for the very kind gift and card which I
was given on Saturday! I've greatly enjoyed being Secretary. Many thanks
indeed for all the help and support I have received from three Chairs
(Gisela Shaw, Lesley Sharpe and Sarah Colvin), two Treasurers (Birgit
Röder and Andrea Hammel) and all the other members of the Committee past
and present, with whom it has been such a great pleasure to work!
At the Business Meeting, Lyn Marven was elected to replace me as
Secretary. Thanks very much to Lyn for being so willing to take on this
role! Andrea Hammel was elected for a further three years as Treasurer
and Marielle Sutherland for a further three years as Part-timer
Representative. She will also look after the interests of those members
working freelance. We are very grateful to both of them for continuing
on the Committee. Margot Patterson came to the end of her time as
Freelance Representative and has become a Magistrate. She plans to train
to act in Family Courts where there are still far too few women. Well
done, Margot! Katharine Griffiths is standing down as Postgraduate
Representative having finished her doctoral thesis and started work in
Durham. Many congratulations to her! Michaela Gigerl will be continuing
as Postgraduate Representative on her own we are grateful to her and
Katharine for their work publicising WIGS at Postgraduate events.
Andrea has been working very hard to set up the new Database of Members.
If you look on the WIGS website, www.wigs.ac.uk, there is a section
labelled 'Members Section'. There, you will eventually be able to log on
and update your postal address and research interests. It should be
working very soon. Thanks very much to Andrea and to Anna Saunders, who
administers the Website, for making the database happen.
Next year's one-day event will take place in Brighton, hosted by Andrea
Hammel. It will be on either the 10th or the 17th of November.
In 2008, a three-day open conference will be held to celebrate the 20th
Anniversary of Women in German Studies! It will be in Galway from 8-10
July and hosted by the German Department of NUI Galway, including
Christiane Schönfeld.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Best wishes,
Charlotte
