Dear Wiggies,
at our annual committee meeting last weekend, we
discussed the possibility of WIGS contributing to the
hardship fund that has been set up for those
participating in the action short of a strike whose
pay will be cut until the dispute has been resolved.
Given our other financial commitments and the finite
nature of the WIGS coffers, such a donation could only
be a symbolic gesture. It was nevertheless felt by
some committee members to be an important expression
of support for those campaigning for fairer pay. This
is not of course something we can decide on without
consulting the membership. Voting is difficult to do
virtually, but we would at least like to launch a
debate on the subject and ask members' views. Should
we take action? Is it a particular part of WIGS' remit
(one of the issues discussed at the committee meeting
was women's 'over-representation' in the lower-paid
sections of the academic hierarchy)? Is it possible to
decide something like this via the internet?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Debbie
