CONFERENCE
Standard, Variation and Language Contact
in the Germanic Languages
Thursday, 23 March - Friday, 24 March 2006
Venue: Stewart House/Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU
Co-Ordinators: Christian Fandrych (KCL) and Reinier Salverda (UCL)
How do processes of language contact today affect the Germanic
languages? What impact does language contact have on their standard
form? What new varieties of language are emerging in the process? These
and related questions will be the subject of this two-day conference,
where distinguished scholars will discuss recent and ongoing
developments in contemporary German, Dutch and Frisian, Low German,
Yiddish, Afrikaans and the Scandinavian languages. The aim of the
conference is to provide a forum for exchange and debate on new
directions in linguistic research across the Germanic languages.
