ICA FILM SEASON
28 April - 18 May, 2006
THE FILMS OF FASSBINDER

The famed German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder
worked at a
prodigious rate from the moment he began filmmaking in
the late 1960s
until his death in 1982. Completing 44 film projects
alone, as well as
continuing his work in theatre (his first discipline),
Fassbinder
remains a model for independent filmmakers seeking to
work hard, fast
and on their own terms. Always vital, honest and full
of emotion,
Fassbinderīs films - many of them social melodramas -
connect directly
with the viewer, making for essential, compulsive
viewing.

The ICA presents a three-week celebration of
Fassbinderīs spirit and
genius, to tie-in with the forthcoming release of 17
key titles on DVD
from Arrow Films.

Cinema 2: 28 Apr, 6.30pm; 30 Apr, 8.30pm
LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH

`the masterful combination of simplicity and
complexity that would
later define Fassbinderīs workī Chicago Reader
A rough and ready crime/road movie in which the
director himself plays
a small-time hood who turns his back on the Mob and
takes off with a
couple of friends (Hanna Schygulla and Ulli Lommel) to
rob a bank. Itīs
far from being a smooth operation, and this is far
from being a smooth
film. Marked by deadpan humour and moments of
introspection,
Fassbinderīs debut is far from his best but remains
fascinating as an
early indicator of his unique style.
Dir Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany 1969, 88
mins, Subs

Cinema 2: 28 Apr, 8.30pm; 29 Apr, 4pm, 30 Apr, 6.15pm
FOX AND HIS FRIENDS

`a rivetting evocation of social Darwinism in actionī
Slant magazine
One of Fassbinderīs greatest films, this study of
class and sexuality
follows young, lower-class hustler `Foxī as he tries
to make his way in
higher society. A lottery win and a bourgeois lover
elevate Fox into a
new world of privilege and etiquette, but it soon
becomes clear that
this foray is not to be a happy one... A powerful
tragedy and, with
Fassbinder himself playing the central role, possibly
a fascinating
self-examination.
Dir Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany 1975, 123
mins, Subs

Cinema 2: 29 Apr, 6.30pm
KATZELMACHER

`funny and tough, sympathetic and causticī New York
Times
A multi-character drama following the various lives
and loves of a
group of city apartment dwellers. Based on
Fassbinderīs first stage
play, this is a formal piece that uses theatrical
conventions to
capture the frustration and alienation felt by the
disparate cast of
characters. A merciless look at cramped human lives,
this is more about
social observation than drama, with its non-judgmental
long takes
allowing scenes to unfold in a natural fashion. A
powerful, remarkable
early masterpiece.
Dir Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany 1969, 88
mins, Subs

Cinema 2: 29 Apr, 8.30pm; 30 Apr, 4pm
ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL

`..achingly tender, brutally wise 1974 masterpieceī
Village Voice
This explicit tribute to the 1950s melodramas of
Douglas Sirk (most
pointedly All That Heaven Allows) is possibly
Fassbinderīs best-known
film. The tale of an unlikely romance between Arab
labourer Ali (El
Hedi ben Salem) and an older widow (Brigitte Mira) he
meets working in
a bar, this is a poignant love story, a shattering
portrait of
loneliness and a perceptive study of the immigrant
experience. A
wonderful example of Fassbinderīs ability to
communicate with direct
emotional clarity through his films.
Dir Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany 1974, 93
mins, Subs

To be continued in May
