FUTURES Project: Future Urban Technologies: Undertaking Research to Enhance Sustainability.
Expected start date: From January 2007
Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship related to the FUTURES,Future Urban Technologies: Undertaking Research to Enhance Sustainability. This project is funded within the SUE, Sustainable Urban Environment Programme. FUTURES is a multidisciplinary project with collaborative partners in the University of Southampton, University of West of England, Bristol and the University of Leeds. The FUTURES project aims to carry out fundamental research to understand the impact of Intelligent Transport Systems on our traffic and transport networks in the future. The project investigates the different technologies from different perspectives, namely people, vehicle and systems. In particular individual studies include: information needs of the unfamiliar traveller, tele-working, bespoke services for personal travel and goods movement, innovative use of road space and the environmental assessment of new vehicle technologies with improved confidence.
This PhD studentship will join the FUTURES research team at the University of Leeds and be appointed in the Institute for Transport Studies. The successful applicant will contribute to the environmental assessment of technologies. The proposed PhD research programme will integrate, within the same traffic micro-simulation model, emissions models for air pollutants and noise. The resulting model will be used to quantify, within known levels of confidence, the impact on the environment of the implementation of integrated intelligent technologies. Such technologies to be considered will result from the outputs of the other projects in the FUTURES consortium and could consider also road user charging, automatic control of vehicle speeds instead of traffic calming, variable message signs, sustainable public transport etc.
For further information see, www.sue-futures.org <http://www.sue-futures.org/> and www.its.leeds.ac.uk <http://www.its.leeds.ac.uk/>
.
It is envisaged that this studentship will be supported by and benefit substantially from involvement with such a high profile EPSRC funded project. It is expected that the student will attend away days and conferences and engage fully with the wider SUE research programme.
The student will be supervised by Professor Margaret Bell, a world leader in sustainable transport. Applicants should be highly self motivated with a genuine interest in environmental impact of traffic, of sustainable transport and technological advances in managing traffic. A high level of numeracy is important, whilst experience with traffic micro-simulation is desirable, but non-essential. Applicants should have, or expect to be awarded, a good first or master's degree.
