Dear all,
on behalf of Frank Schneider, Ruben Gur and Klaus Mathiak I would like to
announce the "International Research Training Group" (see below).
Best wishes,

International Research Training Group
Brain-behavior relationship of normal and disturbed emotions in
schizophrenia and autism
14 Fellowships for Doctoral Students
The newly-founded IRTG Schizophrenia and Autism is funded by the German
Research Council (DFG). A network, comprising of the neuroscience research
at the RWTH Aachen University and the Research Center Juelich, provides an
international curriculum in English with an obligatory and intense exchange
with the University of Pennsylvania.
The participating institutions are: the Child, Adolescent and Adult
Psychiatry and Psychotherapy; Neurology;, Computer Sciences; and the
Institute of Medicine of the Research Center Juelich with the Brain Imaging
Center West. These and associated institutions (Linguistics,
Neuroradiology, Medical Psychology, Ethics etc.) will host the individual
doctoral candidates with joint supervision by a partner in Pennsylvania
(Psychiatry, Neurology, Radiology, Biostatistics etc.). Research topics are
focused on neuronal mechanisms involved in normal and disturbed emotion
processing. The participants of the IRTG will learn and apply advanced
brain imaging techniques including structural and functional magnetic
resonance imaging (high-field MRI and fMRI), positron emission tomography
(PET), whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG), receptor distribution and
micro-structural architectonic brain mapping. A rotation program for
students, researchers and professors with extensive German-American
exchange is central to this IRTG (obligatory and funded are 6-12 months at
the University of Pennsylvania).
The IRTG program for doctoral students seeking a degree in science or
medicine (Dr. med., Dr. nat. med., Dr. rer. medic., Dr. rer. nat., Dr.
phil.) will provide 14 fellowships of Euro 1.468,- per month (plus mobility
and family surcharges if applicable) for a period of up to 3 years
beginning in April 2006. It is anticipated that participants will complete
a research project, under the joint supervision of researchers from
Aachen-Juelich and Pennsylvania, to attain a doctoral degree within this
time frame.
Applicants for the doctoral stipends must hold a Master's degree or a
German Diploma (or an equivalent degree) in a related field, be interested
in neurobiological research in normal and disturbed emotions and have a
good working knowledge of spoken and written English. Transcripts or degree
certificates issued in languages other than English must be accompanied by
English translations.
For all languages other than English or German a certified translation will
be obligatory for employment.
Please send applications in accordance with the instructions given on
