Hi Moo,

There are numerous papers out there using this measure, especially in
language research. We recently published an algorithm allowing to
calculate asymmetry or lateralization indices from functional imaging
data (using a bootstrap approach, Wilke & Schmithorst, NeuroImage 2006
33(2):522-30). It actually is part of a larger toolbox to calculate LIs
in all kinds of ways, some of which should also be applicable to any
kind of imaging data.
Once the main paper describing the toolbox is accepted (hopefully
sometime soon) we will ask John to put it up on the SPM-extensions page.
If you are interested (or anyone else on the list :), e-mail me and I
will send you the archive.
Best,
Marko
