There are earlier posts on WinZip having trouble with tgz (and tar.gz)
files.
eg:
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind01&L=SPM&P=R334252&I=-3
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/wa.exe?A2=ind02&L=SPM&P=R307763&I=-3
I don't know if the files in question were made with tar (using the `z'
option) or by tar and gzip, but I have never had any problems with files
that were made either way when I used ZipGenius.
http://www.zipgenius.it/eng
It's a free program with all the goodies of WinZip (explorer extensions,
etc). I use it mainly to uncompress files that were tgz-ed in Linux.
I don't know if it handles the files in question correctly (haven't
tried), because it may be an endian problem if it involves switching
platforms?
best,
