You can find rendering codes in spm_render.m. I use spm5.
For "old" rednering, this link may help you.

For "new" rendering, the condition is quite different. In spm_render.m
line 153 msk = find(xyz(3,:) < (z1+60) & xyz(3,:) > (z1-5)); end;
line 163 t0 = t(msk).*exp((log(0.5)/10)*dst)';
so that activations that are between 5mm in front of and 60mm behind the
surface are displayed , and then intensity is governed by the
exponential function in line163.
As for the orientation of the display, I attached a jpeg file (46k)
