I was wondering about the same thing last week!
The difference is in the filter. Please check spm_config_dicom.m
data.filter = '.*\.dcm$'; (spm5)
data.filter = 'any'; (spm5b)
After changing the fiter to '*' or 'any' I was able to see the files. However, spm had to be restarted!
