i did as you said, the 2 files were effectively created in my working directory, but they were strangely empty :'(
If it can help you i got this in matlab after executing your script :

To answer you about elaborated tools, before asking here i spent a fex hours in spm archive and spm extensions page withouit found anything. Most tools are for spm99, and i work under spm2... The only one i found, (xml something) cannot be downloaded because its no more on the download page (404 error).
