‘Birth, breastfeeding and becoming a mother - 21st century challenges’
The processes of pregnancy, giving birth and becoming a mother are
fundamental to human life and experienced universally, yet for young
women in the UK in
the 21st century whose lives usually involve so much more than
reproduction and family-life, having a baby can seem ‘different’, and a
worrying prospect. In what circumstances are birth, breastfeeding and
becoming a mother seen as positive, life enhancing experiences and how
can these be shared more widely?
Mary Newburn has four children, two were born in hospital in Cumbria in
the 1970s and two were born at home in London in the 1990s. She trained
as an NCT antenatal teacher before becoming a member of staff in 1988.
Mary has a degree in sociology from the London School of Economics. She
is Head of Policy Research for the National Childbirth Trust and
Honorary Professor at Thames Valley University.
If you would like to attend, please inform [log in to unmask], so
that we can plan refreshments.
