From Barriers to Benefits: Efficiency and Effectiveness of eGovernment
Date: Wed 22 Nov
Speakers: Dr Rebecca Eynon and Prof. Helen Margetts (OII)
Location: IST 2006, Helsinki
Focus: A workshop bringing together researchers and practitioners who are
exploring ways to overcome barriers to eGovernment in order for governments
to reap the benefits of innovation in this area.

The Next Oxford Internet Survey (OxIS)
Date: Fri 24 Nov
Speakers: Prof. William Dutton and Prof. Helen Margetts (OII)
Focus: This interactive workshop seeks to gain feedback on the first two
Oxford Internet Surveys (OxIS), conducted in 2003 and 2005, with a view to
informing the design of the next survey in 2007. There will be an overview
of key research themes and their impacts, and an outline of proposed new
directions.

Zen and the Art of Information Security
Date: Tues 5 December
Speaker: Ira Winkler, CISSP, President of the Internet Security Advisors
Group
Focus: People perceive information security to be a complicated and
expensive process. The reality is that security is much easier to achieve
than other people believe. People want to treat computers and information
like they are special, but by taking a simple philosophy with information
protection, everyone can comprehend the threat, and learn how to adequately
protect information.

The Internet: Power and Governance in a Digitised World
Date: Wed 6 December
Location: St Antony's College, Oxford
Focus: Conference in preparation for a special themed Issue of St Antony's
International Review (STAIR), organised in collaboration with the OII. The
conference aims to explore and understand dynamics of power and governance
through the Internet.

2. OII DPhil
-------------------
The admissions procedure is open for students wishing to apply for 2007/08
entry to the DPhil (doctorate) in 'Information, Communication and the Social
Sciences', offered by the OII. Up to six students will normally be admitted
per year to undertake groundbreaking, detailed study of the Internet and its
social impact. Applicants should have already completed a taught Masters
course or other advanced degree, typically but not exclusively within one of
the social sciences, including law. Candidates from other disciplines
embracing the social study of technology are also welcome.

3. New Project
-------------------
The COMPANIONS project started on 1 November: it is an Integrated Project
supported by the European Commission's 6th Framework Programme. Lead by OII
Visiting Professor Yorick Wilks, the COMPANIONS vision is that of a
personalised conversational interface, one that knows and understands its
owner, and can act as an alternative access point to resources on the
Internet.

5. Call for Papers

The journal 'Information Technology and Politics', now the official journal
of the Information Technology and Politics section of the American Political
Science Association, has issued a call for papers on the challenges and
opportunities presented by information technology and the Internet in
politics and government. OII Professor Helen Margetts is a member of the
Senior Editorial Board.
