November 8th Dr Gus Hosein LSE Fellow We fought the law and the law
won: the policy fight over the UK Identity Cards Act The use of
technology to transform government is nothing new. For ages we have
been trying to use technology to solve our social problems. Often this
does not work. More interesting is to consider what happens when it
does work, and what is the relationship between pragmatics and
principles, particularly when the relationship between the citizen and
the state is at stake. This presentation will make use of recent cases
including the UK identity card policy. For more information please see
http://personal.lse.ac.uk/hosein Dr Hosein specialises in privacy, the
interplay between technology and society and civil liberties. His
current research deals with anti-terrorism policies, civil liberties,
privacy and international policy dynamics. He is an advisor to
non-governmental organisations in the US and Europe and has consulted
for a variety of governmental institutions.
