CALL FOR PAPERS
Announcement of a joint conference of the European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR) and the Deutsche Vereinigung für Religionswissenschaft (DVRW)
Location: The University of Bremen, Germany
Dates: September 23-27, 2007
Conference Title: "PLURALITY AND REPRESENTATION. RELIGION IN EDUCATION, CULTURE AND SOCIETY"
This joint conference of the DVRW and the EASR deals with plurality and the representation of religion(s) in education, culture and society, taking up the topical issue of integrating religious or value plurality in the context of both globalisation and migration processes in Europe and elsewhere. The conference will engage with social, political and cultural debates about processes of transformation in Europe, and with the dynamics of representation of religion(s) in a global, comparative perspective, thus shedding new light on European debates about plurality and representation. Religious plurality and claims to religious and cultural representation in society form part of a field contested in particular between (historically, regionally and socially) established religions and religious minorities. Democratic societies are confronted with problems arising from the discrepancy between traditional privileges of established religions and the idea of equality among people
with different orientations in religion, worldview or view of life. In the secular social realm these problems appear, for example, when attempts are made to secure the influence of currently or formerly dominant traditions and values, frequently with reference to the “cultural heritage” of a state or a region. Furthermore, individual religions have different and sometimes conflicting expectations with respect to the representation of their traditions in plural educational, cultural and social contexts.

Proposals for papers and panel sessions (abstracts of not more than 200 words) may be sent to Wanda Alberts ([log in to unmask]). Proposals may be submitted now, and we encourage you to do so early. A second announcement giving precise deadlines will be sent out in October. At that time specific information regarding registration, accommodation, and other practical matters will be provided as well.
Please note that we can offer a limited number of grants for scholars from Eastern Europe (see web site).
With very good wishes from Bremen,
Gritt Klinkhammer and Wanda Alberts
