Research Fellow, Ethnography of Medical Research

A research fellow with a degree or PhD in social or cultural
anthropology, or a related humanistic discipline (science and
technology studies, human geography, history, sociology) is sought,
to work in a small group of social anthropologists studying the work
of medical science and research in Africa. This Research Fellow will
work on a Wellcome Trust funded ethnographic study of large scale,
field-based research on HIV, conducted in a long-term collaboration
between African, American and European scientists in Kenya. The
Research Fellow will be based for a larger part of her/his employment
in Africa, conducting ethnographic fieldwork among scientist as well
as the rural and urban study populations. Candidates with prior
knowledge of Africa and/or of anthropological studies of science and
technology will be preferred. The post is for two years , but the
person appointed will be encouraged to seek further funding, or if
not yet in possession of a PhD to pursue further study as a member of
the group.
The salary range will be on the R1B/R1A scale: (£20,044-£24 352 pa
plus, if relevant £2982 pa displacement allowance, whilst in Kenya)
(£23 026 - £27 334 pa inc, whilst in London UK).
