Applied Research Methods with Marginal and Hidden Populations
14 - 18 August (one week course / 35 hrs)
University of Essex, 39th Essex Summer School in Social Science Data
Analysis & Collection
Course Content: The course provides an overview of research methods in
conducting research, both qualitative and quantitative, with marginal and
hidden populations, such as children, migrants, sex workers, homeless,
victims of child labour or trafficking, HIV/AIDS, victims of violence. The
course introduces the main theories and approaches on hidden and marginal
populations, using different frameworks and techniques. It explores topics
such as participatory research, the use of qualitative and quantitative
methods, estimation methods (sampling, capture and recapture, etc) , and
ethical considerations arising when conducting this type of research.
Focusing on action-oriented research, the course will also address the use
of research in monitoring and evaluating the impact of actions and
programmes.
Course Objectives: The course aims to enable participants to undertake
empirical research with marginal and hidden populations, and seeks to
encourage participants to develop methodological strategies for the
collection and analysis of such data. This entails using several data
strategies, and knowing the ethical considerations to be taken into
account.
